Ellington School began back in 1914 as a small brick county school in Adams County and was later incorporated into the Quincy Public School system. Somewhere in the past, the Eagle symbol was discarded. Then in 1993 the PTA & the students voted to officially reinstate the Ellington Eagle as the school mascot. It is a reprisal of the mascot that was Ellington's symbol when the school still served as a K-6 building.
Prior to 1987, elementary schools in Quincy did not have PE teachers. The classroom teachers were required to assume that responsibility. Then in 1987, Quincy received a grant that allowed the Quincy Public Schools to hire PE teachers at the elementary level. After the grant expired, the PE teachers were released.
During the teachers strike, the Union and the Board agreed to reinstate the PE program. Since then, the various elementary PE teachers have earned numerous accolades, which include several Outstanding Educator awards, two Golden Apple awards, and 5 PE Teachers were recognized by IAHPERD - the State's Professional Organization. IAHPERD is a professional organization that stands for the: Illinois Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance.

As a result of financial concerns in the 2003-04 school year, several programs were cut again. The board had to make so many cuts, they obviously wish they didn't have too. Fortunately, most of the programs that were cut earlier, returned in the 2004-05 year.
